6x9: An immersive experience of solitary confinement
United Kingdom, 2016 / 10 min / English OV / VR Documentary
“6x9” is an innovative virtual reality experience about solitary confinement created by The Guardian. 6x9 places viewers in a virtual cell, telling a story of the psychological damage provoked by extreme isolation. Right now, more than 80,000 people are in solitary confinement in the US. They spend 22-24 hours a day in their cells, with little to no human contact for days or even decades.
Inside the cell, as the viewer turns his head, are the contents of a typical cell: the poured concrete bed he’s sitting on, a poured concrete desk opposite, a combination sink/toilet. Five books are on the desk, a letter, a roll of toilet paper. All the voices in this film are real. Seven people who were in solitary confinement in California and New York were recorded for a Frontline documentary called “Solitary Nation.”

“6x9 enables users to relate to the prisoners' experiences in a more intimate and direct way” Melina Gills, Tribeca Film Festival 28/03/2016
“(…) 6x9 is a perfect example of VR technology's journalistic and activist potential. In embodying its own argument about the mental and physical toll that solitary confinement takes on people, Panetta and Poulter have managed to push beyond statistics and testimonials to produce a powerful experience that embraces what might be the most powerful political tool in our arsenal: our own empathy.” Manuel Betancourt, Mic Network Inc, 21/04/2015
