The Other Side of Hope (Toivon Tuolla puolen)

Aki Kaurismäki

Finland, 2017 / 98 min / Finnish, English, Swedish and Arabic OV with FR and NL subtitles / Drama

Helsinki and Finland through the eyes of a Syrian refugee.

One day, a restaurateur with a poker addiction stumbles upon Khaled, a Syrian refugee who claims the restaurant’s rubbish disposal area is his bedroom. Their first encounter ends in a fight, but with time, a friendship forms between the two men and another refugee from Iraq. Together with the employees of the restaurant, they help Khaled to make sense of the peculiarities of a country where strangers smiling in public are easily mistaken for crazy people. But things change when news of his sister reach Khaled.

This second chapter in Aki Kaurismäki’s “port city trilogy” after 2011’s “Le Havre” is set in Helsinki and shows the Finnish capital from the perspective of an immigrant. Kaurismäki comments on the “refugee crisis” by, using the “stranger in a strange land” setting as a means to lovingly poke fun at Finnish quirks.

Biography

Born 1957 in Southern Finland, Aki Kaurismäki is Finland’s most renowned filmmaker. After graduating in media studies at the University of Tampere, he started off working on films with his older brother Mika Kaurismäki, with whom he also founded the production company Villealfa Filmproductions.. In 1989, he gained worldwide attention with “Leningrad Cowboys Go America”, about a fictional Russian band whom he returned to in several other films. His films are typically bleak, dark and absurdist comedies with taciturn protagonists and a deadpan humour.
