THE REALM (EL REINO)

Rodrigo Sorogoyen

Spain, France, 2018 / 122 min / Spanish OV with English subt. (ES OV with EN subt.) / Thriller

How far is a person willing to go in order to hold on to power?

Manuel López-Vidal is a beloved and influential local politician who has everything going his way for making his leap into national politics. But he is also a corrupt man who has been enriching himself with public funds for years. On the verge of taking over as leader of his party, news leaks of his involvement in a corruption ring. When one of his best friends gets involved in the scandal, the party’s members – to Manuel’s surprise – close rank and seek to place the blame for the entire plot solely on his shoulders. But Manuel refuses to take the fall alone. Rather than admit to any wrongdoing, Manuel decides to sell out his whole party in an effort to avoid jail time. It’s a decision that puts many lives at risk. In a party system in which the kings fall, but the kingdoms continue, how far is one person willing to go in order to hold on to power?

“Sorogoyen’s latest presents the murky depths of the political realm while exploring the dark desires, enormous egos, and greed of players more interested in gaming the system than serving the public. Sorogoyen and Peña’s beautifully structured script employs unexpected plot twists and high-stakes action. It keeps audiences glued to the screen. In this realm, jaw-dropping nepotism and exploitation become an everyday setting for this fascinating exploration of government.” Diana Sanchez, Toronto International Film Festival

« Rodrigo Sorogoyen has come up with a forceful and adrenaline-charged thriller that grapples with Spain’s hottest topic: corruption among the political class.” David González, Cineuropa, 24/09/2018

“A fast-moving, quick-minded takedown of Spanish political corruption.[…] Realm's concerns, at a time of great political distrust, are universal. It’s likely to be automatically dismissed as fodder for Spanish-speaking and a couple of Euro territories, but this may be rather like suggesting that Goodfellas (no comparison of course intended) could only appeal to Italian-Americans. Realm is a fine example of concerned, contemporary cinema that also happens to be a lot of fun to watch; it deserves to be seen by as many people as possible..” Jonathan Holland, The Hollywood Reporter, 24/09/2018
