Terrence Malick was born in Ottawa, Illinois in 1943. He graduated at Harvard with a degree in philosophy and went on to work for Life and The New Yorker. In 1969 he started a Master of Fine Arts degree in filmmaking at the American Film Institute Conservatory. His first two films were the critically acclaimed “Badlands” (1973) and “Days of Heaven” (1978). After a 20-year-break from filmmaking, he directed “The Thin Red Line” in 1998, nominated for 7 Academy Awards. In 2011, he won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for “Tree of Life”.
