Clio Barnard wurde in Otley (Leeds, West Yorkshire) in England geboren. Die Regisseurin und Produzentin erlangte Bekanntheit mit The Arbor (2010) und Dark River (2017). 2013 wurde sie für ihren Film The Selfish Giant, der für die Quinzaine des Réalisateurs auf den Filmfestspielen in Cannes ausgewählt wurde, als bedeutende neue Stimme des britischen Kinos gefeiert.
