Alejandro Jodorowsky

Alejandro Jodorowsky is a director, screenwriter and comic book author born in Chile in 1929. He moves to Paris in 1953 where he worked in Mime Marceau’s theatre company and staged shows for Maurice Chevalier. In 1962, he founded the theatre collective “Panique” with Fernando Arrabal and Roland Topor. Three years later, he left Paris for Mexico to direct three of his most famous films that earned him international recognition: Fando and Lis (1968), El topo (1970) and the Holy Mountain (1973). He returned to France in 1973 to start working on an ambitious project: the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune series. Even though the film never ended up seeing the light of day, the creativity of its storyboards and the assembled team went on to inspire several future science fiction films. For most of the 1980s, Alejandro Jodorowsky worked on graphic novels with among others Moebius, Arno and Boucq, and became one of the best-know and prolific comic book authors of the decade. He returned to cinema in 1989 with Santa Sangre and directed, in 1990, The Rainbow Thief starring Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif. His autobiographical film The Dance of Reality (2013) premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. Alejandro Jodorowsky is a multifaceted artist and the author of plays, novels, essays and collections of poetry. He also cultivates a passion for psychomagic and divinatory tarot cards that inspire his films, books and graphic novels.
