Jafar Panahi who was born on July 11th 1960 at Miyaneh, Iran, is of one of Iran’s most influential directors of the new wave movement. After completing his studies at the College of Cinema and Television in Tehran, he made several short and medium-length films for the Iranian television. In 1992, he was hired as an assistant to the director Abbas Kiarostami on the film "Through the Olive Trees". In 1995, he directed his first feature film, "The White Balloon", which was based on a screenplay by his friend Kiarostami and won the Camera d'Or at Cannes in the same year. In 1997, he was awarded  a Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival for "The Mirror" which was followed in 2000 by a Golden Lion in Venice for "The Circle". In 2003/04, Jafar Panahi directed his third feature film, entitled "Crimson Gold". In 2006, Jafar Panahi focused on the subject of football, with the film "Offside» that tells the story of a young woman who is desperate to attend a football match, an activity that is prohibited to women in Iran.
