Critics Award 2019

by Rodrigo Sorogoyen

Honourable mention:
by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra

The ALPC - Association Luxembourgeoise de la Presse Cinématographique dedicated the CRITICS AWARD to THE REALM (EL REINO) by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. An honourable mention went to BIRDS OF PASSAGE (PÁJAROS DE VERANO) by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra. Jury members PABLO CHIMIENTI, RAÚL REIS and JEAN-PIERRE THILGES issued the following statement:

“As members of the Press Jury we have watched all ten Official Competition films. Ten film that have surprised, disturbed, moved, and sometimes also bored us. They all took us on a journey into very different universes, via eclectic cinematographic experiences: from contemporary Canada, to 19th century Vietnam, to 1960s Turkey and Thatcher-era England.

Two films caught our eye in particular which is why the Press Jury would like to present a special mention to an astonishing film with carefully chosen set pieces and beautiful costumes. A film which manages to add a new perspective to narcoterrorism and introduces viewers to a fascinating language and culture, “Wayuu”: BIRDS OF PASSAGE (PÁJAROS DE VERANO) by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra.

But in the end, there can only be one! As journalists, we were especially impressed by the very unorthodox narrative choices of this film that was inspired by real-life stories. This super-intense and nerve-wracking thriller could have been a docu-drama on contemporary politics and corruption. A film with clean images, inspiring actors and frenetic music, which depicts a genre-defining car crash that comes out of nowhere. Those who have seen the film will have already guessed it, the Critics Award 2019 goes to the Spanish film THE REALM (EL REINO)by Rodrigo Sorogoyen.”
