THE WOLVES (LOS LOBOS)
by Samuel Kishi Leopo
The ALPC - Association Luxembourgeoise de la Presse Cinématographique - dedicated the CRITICS AWARD to Quo Vadis, Aida? by Jasmila Žbanić. An honourable mention went to The Wolves (Los Lobos) by Samuel Kishi Leopo. Jury members France Clarinval, Geoff Thompson and Loïc Millot issued the following statement:
At the end of this 11th Luxembourg City Film Festival, the Press Jury – made up of France Clarinval, Loïc Millot and Geoff Thompson – met to discuss the Official Competition’s 8 fiction features. "After reviewing each one of them, we chose a Bosnian film, directed by Jasmila Žbanić, as the winner of this year’s Critics Award: Quo Vadis, Aida?.
By presenting the Award to this film, we wanted to both commemorate the terrible massacres committed in Bosnia-Herzegovina in the early 1990s and highlight the scientific research that, up to the present day, is still trying to identify the victims. The aesthetic qualities of this film which intertwines historical and family tragedies, as well as the marvellous performance of the Serbian actress Jasna Đuričić, have particularly moved us.
Finally, we’re also awarding a special mention to the Mexican film The Wolves (Los lobos), by Samuel Kishi Leopo, which portrays the daily life of a woman and her two children, newly arrived in the United States, with great dignity and tenderness. No wall will ever prevent people from coming together."
