School Jury Award

School Jury Award

A group of 12-15 year old students would have presented the second ever SCHOOL JURY AWARD during the Festival's award ceremony on 14th March 2020 at Kinepolis Kirchberg which had to be cancelled due to the premature stop of the Festival on Thursday, 12th March following the increase in Covid-19 cases.

However, as the members of the School Jury managed to view all of the films of their selection, they chose to give the SCHOOL JURY AWARD to ROADS by Sebastian Schipper.

Satement of the School Jury (6eG class of the École privée Notre-Dame Sainte Sophie – teacher: Martina Baden):
“Our class 6eG of the Sainte Sophie school had the amazing opportunity to watch several films in our function as School Jury.
It was an exciting week for us – not only because each morning started with a visit to the cinema. We got to see different films about migration, films that we would not necessarily have chosen to see by ourselves. This gave us the chance to discover very different kinds of films with different perspectives that lead to many discussions.

We almost unanimously agreed to present the School Jury Award to ROADS by Sebastian Schipper.

A film that we liked from the very beginning as it sheds light on so many things. Gillen and William taught us that even though we are all different, there is plenty that we all have in common: friendship, our pastimes, our problems, and other things that touch us deeply.
It was thrilling to tag along the two guys’ trip as we easily managed to put ourselves in their place. The events of the film, as far from our daily lives and experiences as they may be, were brought very close to us. The development of the two protagonists was staged very well – especially through the remarkable interplay of brightness and darkness, light and shadow.  We also learnt a lot, particularly about the situation in Calais… and we were shocked that such things are happening in Europe, right on our doorstep.

Thank you for having given us the opportunity to experience the Festival as jurors.”
