The commedia dell'arte (lit. “theatre of the professional”) is a form of Italian popular theatre in which masked actors perform improvised comedies featuring themes of naivety, cunning and ingenuity.
Alexander Glandien, Clara Thomine, Loïc Vanderstichelen and Jean-Paul Jacquet take a look at the world of art, as well as their own activity as artists. They reveal what is not ordinarily shown: behind the scenes of a museum and how it operates as well as a stereotypical discourse on art.
Whenever art reclaims the discourse of art and its mechanisms, it involves a deconstruction, or a making of of the making of, in other words: a mockery. The films screened in the context of the La commedia dell'arte programming feature masquerades, cunning schemes and great ingenuity, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. With great humour, the artists tackle the world of art, while also questioning the unrelenting compulsion to document and commentate on it at all costs.
