In conjunction with the exhibition William Kentridge – More Sweetly Play the Dance at Mudam

For this year’s annual collaboration with the Luxembourg City Film Festival, Mudam has given Carte Blanche to William Kentridge who has suggested the work of the young South African director, Naomi van Niekerk. A marathon of animated shorts by the director will be screened in Mudam’s Auditorium on the 14th March.

Naomi van Niekerk (born in 1984) works with moving images, printmaking, puppetry and performance. She received a BA in Dramatic Arts from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and a diploma in the art of puppetry from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts de la Marionnette in France. She collaborated with dancers and musicians to produce interdisciplinary performances that combine animation, live drawing, movement and music: Epitaphe (2010), Sfeer (2013), Kontinuum (2014), The Impermanence Museum (2014) and The Alchemy of Words (2017). These performances have toured several significant festivals in Europe, including the Festival d’Avignon and the World Puppet Theatre Festival in Charleville-Mézières. Between 2014 and 2017 she directed and independently produced three animated short films that were extensively shown at many international film festivals: ‘n Gewone Blou Maandagoggend (2014), By alle skone dinge (2015) and My mamma is bossies (2017). She won the Jean-Luc Xiberras Award for the Best First Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2016. She won Digilab Africa with the VR project Two Worlds (2018) which she created together with Arnaud van Vliet. Naomi van Niekerk has participated in residencies at the GoetheonMain space and The Centre for the Less Good Idea in Johannesburg, the Institut International de la Marionnette in Charleville-Mézières, the Cinémathèque Québécoise in Montréal, and Lucid Realities in Paris.
