Description:

The Holocaust, the systematic exclusion, persecution and murder of European Jews by the Nazi regime, is a central event in recent human history. Since both the extent of this mass murder and the - partly industrial - methods used by the Nazis to put the so-called "Final Solution to the Jewish Question" into practice in extermination camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau have become known, debates have also been held about whether the Shoah can be told in a medium at all - or whether the events exceed the possibilities and limits of (cinematic) representation. Holocaust survivor, writer and later Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel wrote in the 1980s: "One does not imagine the unimaginable. And in particular, one doesn‘t show it on screen."

Nonetheless, since 1945, countless European as well as U.S. documentary, cinema and television productions have attempted to reconstruct and narrate the experience and functioning of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps on film. Do these films "trivialize" the genocide of European Jews - or are they important reminders that make tangible and preserve the unimaginable and immeasurable?

This Ciné-Conférence offers, in Luxembourgish and accompanied by numerous film clips, a historical overview of the cinematic representation of the Holocaust, from 1945 to today.
