A man who survived the gas chambers becomes the ringleader at an asylum for Holocaust survivors.
Israel in 1961. Nathan Stein who runs a mental institution for Holocaust survivors is taking a keen interest in his newest patient, Adam Stein, a charismatic man with a tragic past who believes he can read other people’s minds. Before the war, Adam owned a variety theatre in Berlin where he pleased audiences and the Nazis alike with magic tricks, musical numbers and cabaret performances, until he and his family were sent to a concentration camp. Adam managed to survive by accepting daily humiliation and becoming the camp commandant’s “dog”. While entertaining the officers, his wife and daughter were sent off to die. Outwardly charming and witty, Adam is tormented by survivor’s guilt and his resurfacing canine habits.

Born to Calvinist parents who didn’t let him watch any film before he was 18, Paul Schrader has since made up for lost time. He is a graduate of Columbia University and of the UCLA graduate film programme. Although his name is often linked to the New Hollywood generation, he stands out from his contemporaries through his foreign influences, drawn from the works of Robert Bresson, Yasujirô Ozu and Carl Theodor Dreyer. After working as a film critic for a while, he began his writing career and became one of Hollywood’s most renowned screenwriters, most notably with the script for Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976). The film’s success allowed Schrader to start making his own films, and he became known for his willingness to take stylistic and thematic risks while working at the heart of the Hollywood system. To date, he has directed 22 feature films. Adam Resurrected (2008) is his 17th feature film.
