ADOLESCENTES

Sébastien Lifshitz

France, 2019 / 135 min / French OV with English subt. / documentary

The lives of two French teenagers act as a reflection of France’s recent past.

Anaïs and Emma have been inseparable best friends since childhood despite their differences in social backgrounds and character. Director Sébastien Lifshitz followed the two over the course of five years, creating an incredible insight into their lives from the age of 13 to 18. Five critical years in which radical transformations – be they emotional, physical or intellectual – and many firsts punctuate their daily lives. As we get to watch them as they grow into adulthood, one can’t but wonder what kind of women they will turn out to be and how their friendship will evolve. Meanwhile, the film also manages to interweave their personal stories with major political and societal events in France, painting a rare portrait of the country and its recent history.

“An engrossing and valuable endeavour, documenting adolescence from a female perspective, informing and entertaining in equal parts.” Meredith Taylor, filmuforia, 09/08/19
