COCOON (KOKON)

Leonie Krippendorff

Germany, 2020 / 95 min / German OV / Drama, Romance

In the heat of a shimmering Berlin summer, Nora falls in love for the first time and discovers a whole new world.

Berlin-Kreuzberg is Nora's microcosm. Nora, the silent observer, is always tagging along: At parties, at school, at the pool, on rooftops and in apartments. Young and cool Nora drifts around the monotonous housing blocks with her big sister and her friends, witnessing events that seem to cross-fade in the summer light. Girls who want to be slim and pretty, boys who say dumb things to provoke or because they are in love. Ruthless smartphone cameras and fragile teenagers. But Nora has her own way of looking at the world and when she meets Romy, she realises why: With Romy, noisy Kreuzberg suddenly seems endlessly large and full of hidden beauty. There is music in the air, Nora's body is changing, and caterpillars are spinning their cocoons. When summer ends, things will never be the same again.

Cocoon tells an important story about how liberating it is to strip away media-created body images in order to really feel yourself for the first time.” Director’s statement by Leonie Krippendorff

“Leonie Krippendorf carefully chooses what to show clearly to the young target audience and what to imply, especially in building the background and mood. […] The title of the feature is quite an obvious metaphor for coming of age, but it is well supported cinematically by the dream-like scenes of Nora growing caterpillars in a jar under her bed. The cinematography by Martin Neumeyer is both solid and creative: it incorporates hand-held camerawork with just enough shakiness to evoke the elated mood of a teenager's summer, combined with a couple of Nora's reflective, horizontal smartphone videos to nail both the zeitgeist and the hero's romantic spirit” Vladan Petkovic, Cineuropa, 22/02/2020
