DIE MISSION DER LIFELINE
Germany , 2019 / 68 min / English and German OV with German subt. / documentary
The story of the “Lifeline” and her crew who made it their mission to save refugees from drowning in the Mediterranean.
To save refugees from drowning, Axel Steier and his team from the Dresden sea rescue NGO "Mission Lifeline" have worked tirelessly for years and collected donations. Together with two Spanish NGOs, they finally manage to buy their own ship and set off to the Mediterranean. In his hometown Dresden, Axel's idea finds many friends but just as many enemies. They have to endure hatred and public attacks of citizens and certain politicians, including the right-wing populist Pegida movement. And then, they are faced with the harsh realities at sea: technical difficulties, refugee boats sinking before their eyes, even gunfire by Libyan militias. For two years, Markus Weinberg and Luise Baumgarten accompanied Axel and his crew with their cameras, even onto the ship just off the Libyan coast, where the struggle to save people from certain death ultimately also turns into a fight for the European idea.
