ENORMOUS (ÉNORME)

Sophie Letourneur

France, 2019 / 98 min / French OV with English subt. / comedy

An unexpected desire for children threatens the equilibrium of a couple solely living for their musical passion.

Claire is an internationally acclaimed pianist who travels the world with her husband Fréderic who also acts as her agent/coach/minder/PA. For the sake of Claire’s career, both have decided not to have children and have lived in perfect, childless harmony. Everything changes, however, when Fréderic witnesses a surprise childbirth on a flight from Paris to New York, igniting an unexpected desire for parenthood in him. Fréderic decides to tamper with Claire’s birth control pills. Soon after, the successful pianist wakes up to her worst nightmare: she is pregnant and morphing in an enormous round ball!

A wacky comedy tackling toxic masculinity, gender dynamics and womanhood. “Enormous bends expectations, genders and couple dynamics in unexpected, weird and tender ways. Claire rediscovers a body she has neglected and a sense of freedom. Frederic lives his wife's pregnancy more than by proxy: gaining weight, attending courses for expectant moms and 'feeling' her pain. It's in its most absurd moments that the film tackles womanhood the best.” International Film Festival Rotterdam

Biography

Sophie Letourneur is a French screenwriter and director. She studied film at the Duperré School of Applied Arts and at the French Design School of Decorative Arts, ENSAD, before directing her first short film La Tête dans le vide (2004). The success of her next shorts Manue Bolonaise (2005) and Roc et Canyon (2007) enabled her to direct her first feature film Chicks (2009) which won two awards at the Belfort Entrevues Film Festival and at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2010. Enormous (2019) is her fourth feature-length film. Although she experiments in different forms of film, Letourneur often playfully trains the camera on the everyday lives of young women.
