Rithy Panh was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 1964. He fled the Khmer Rouge dictatorship when he was only 15 and came to Paris in 1980 where he studied at the prestigious Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (now La Fémis). Following his training, he produced his first documentary, Site 2 (1989), which focused on Cambodian refugee camps. He now has dual Franco-Cambodian nationality. This first film is selected in many international festivals. From then on, Rithy Panh never ceased to show the tragedy of his country through documentaries such as The Land of Wandering Souls (1999), or feature films such as The People of the Rice Field (1994) and One Evening After the War (1998). Traumatized by an extremely violent genocide – two million Cambodians, or one in four, exterminated in four years – Rithy Panh became a filmmaker mainly to testify and transmit the memory of this unspeakable tragedy. His 2003 documentary S-21, la machine de mort Khmère rouge addressed the Khmer Rouge’s policy of systematic extermination between 1975 and 1979. He is the co-founder of the Centre Bophana which is dedicated to archiving Cambodian film heritage. In 2013, his film L’image manquante was the first Cambodian production to be nominated for an Oscar. Everything Will Be Ok is his lastest feature film.
