Pietro Marcello, Francesco Munzi, Alice Rohrwacher

Italy, 2021 / 105 min / Italian OV with French subtitles / Documentary

Collaboration with Villerupt Festival

Trio of famous Italian filmmakers Pietro Marcello (Martin Eden), Francesco Munzi (Black Souls) and Alice Rohrwacher (Happy as Lazzaro) go travel around their country in order to give a voice to the Italian Youth.

A powerful collective work on the dreams and fears on this new generation, torn between the opportunities that surround them, the dream of what they want to become, the fear of failing, the trials they hope to overcome.

With today’s political divisions, socioeconomic unease, overreliance on technology, and global weather crisis, the conversations they foster feel particularly urgent—these 15- to 20-year-olds together ask the implicit question: is there a future at all? At the same time, the intelligence, expressiveness, and foresight evinced by these teenagers in this moving and masterful film kindles a form of hope in itself.

Futura is a film where collectiveness is at the service of a whole project.

“Alice Rohrwacher, Pietro Marcello and Francesco Munzi, three of the most interesting Italian directors to have emerged in recent years.” - Vittorio Scarpa, Cineuropa, 13/07/2021

“Futura grippingly delves deep into the preoccupations and concerns of the current generation while providing much hope.” John Lynn, 20/10/2021, International Cinephile Society

“Together with a refreshingly frugal usage of classical music, the film gives us an eerily palpable sense of the effects of the pandemic on the already precarious lives of young people, while embodying—in its very visual language—the sort of creativity that can turn liabilities into assets.” Diego Semerene, Slant, 15/09/2021
