GEVAR’S LAND (ARD GEVAR)
France, Qatar, 2020 / 77 min / Arabic OV with French &/or English subt. / Documentary
A Syrian refugee settles in the suburbs of Reims and tills a vegetable garden. Like his plants, he tries to take root in this new life.
Having recently left Syria with his partner and son, Gevar has just moved to a suburb of Reims. He decides to rent a small patch of land to grow vegetables and to keep himself busy. On the small balcony of his apartment, he carefully cultivates watermelon, zucchini and aubergine seedlings before transferring them to his new plot of land. Filmmaker Qutaibe Barhamji follows Gevar over the course of four seasons as he settles on this new ground that often rebels against the family’s hopes. Just like his plants, Gevar slowly takes root in a new place.
