Going to School (Villads fra Valby)

Frederik Meldal Nørgaard

Denmark, 2015 / 76 min / Danish OV with Luxembourgish dubbing / Family Comedy

A plea against growing up too fast.

6-year-old Villads is an ordinary boy preparing for his next big childhood step – his first day at school. Everyday life confronts Villads with many challenges which he tries to tackle with his very own vivid imagination and unspoiled logic. But in a world where the rules are set by grown-ups, his childhood perspective often conflicts with those around him and causes all sorts of trouble. Indeed, Villads has to understand the consequences of his childish games, but it is above all the adults in his world who should learn how to meet children on their own terms.

“Going to School” is a plea for the power of imagination and the right to a childhood in which children can be children and have the right to free play. The fast-paced film celebrates the kids’ extravagant imagination in colourful sequences – a modern version of Astrid Lindgren’s “Emil i Lönneberga”.
