GREENER GRASS

Jocelyn DeBoer, Dawn Luebbe

USA, 2019 / 101 min / English OV with French subt. / comedy, satire

A deliciously twisted, hilariously deadpan comedy set in a demented, timeless suburbia where soccer moms constantly compete with each other while their kids settle differences on the field.

Soccer moms and best friends Jill and Lisa live their perfect lives in their perfect homes in an idyllic suburban community with their happy families. In their picture-perfect suburbia, adults wear braces on perfectly straight teeth, couples coordinate meticulously pressed outfits, and everyone is going out of their ways to fit in. When Jill and Lisa are not out grocery shopping, they exchange fashion tips and compliment their neighbours’ potluck dips at birthday parties. The women struggle to maintain their pleasant and harmonious façade as they constantly and desperately vie for validation. Things get weird when Jill gifts Lisa her newborn baby in an altruistic gesture. Overwhelmed by paranoia, Jill’s fears and anxieties quickly unravel. And when a psycho yoga teacher killer gets on the loose in the neighbourhood, things take a turn into the sinister.

“Writers and directors Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe confirm their gift for outrageous absurdity in this impressive debut dark comedy full of unsettling behaviour. Brimming with a talented cast of comedic favourites, Greener Grass fully commits to a demented version of suburbia as DeBoer and Luebbe scrutinize the willingness to endure extreme discomfort in exchange for conformity.” Sundance Film Festival

“Franz Kafka meets Serial Mom meets Edward Scissorhands somewhere on the edge of whatever alternative universe The Lobster was set could be one clumsy way to describe Greener Grass, a frequently funny black comedy feature debut from the writing-directing team of Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe, both Upright Citizens Brigade alumni.” Leslie Felperin, The Hollywood Reporter, 02/12/19

“This wonderfully weird suburban satire is the year’s most inventive movie. Not everyone will like it, but the people who vibe to filmmakers and stars Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe's singular vision will love the inventive duo forever. […] Greener Grass has much more up its sleeve than trite genre riffs. […] Greener Grass handily subverts persistent cultural ideas about not offending anyone and pushes them to ambitious, amusing ends. Instead of playing things safe, DeBoer and Luebbe trot in the opposite direction, showing what it would actually look like if people only cared about keeping up appearances and not ruffling feathers, while also striving for their own sense of superiority.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire, 15/10/2019

"DeBoer and Luebbe’s [film is a] future cult favorite — a fate that seems all but guaranteed for this weird and wonderful comedy of manners […] it’s basically the best “Saturday Night Live” movie that “Saturday Night Live” never made […] Greener Grass is so consistently daffy that its unpredictable, outta-left-field situations alone would have been enough to keep us giggling for the length of a feature. In the end, presented as if filtered through a sunny Instagram setting, Greener Grass won't exactly make you envious of the over-idealized lifestyle it skewers, and yet it's such a delightful place to inhabit, you won't want to leave when the credits roll." Peter Debruge, Variety, 02/02/19

“Both DeBoer and Luebbe have performed with the improv comedy troupe Upright Citizens Brigade for over a decade. They bring that experience to their creation of this alternate universe, an unholy mix of Blue Velvet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and The Stepford Wives. […] Like all good satires, Greener Grass trucks in exaggeration. Anyone "getting ahead" of anyone else is looked on with suspicion. Personal relationships have a generic quality because if you say you're "best friends" with someone, someone else might feel left out. Being "unselfish" can be a competition, especially when done performatively. In the leveling world of Greener Grass, "standing out" is terrifying. It's Tall Poppy Syndrome on amphetamines.” Sheila O’Malley, RogerEbert.com, 18/10/2019
