THE KITE (ŠARKAN)

A little boy realises that, despite death, the bond he shares with his grandpa is everlasting.
Each day after school a little boy visits his grandpa to fly his kite. But as time passes, his grandfather gets older and more and more tired. The boy believes that they will get to fly the kite together forever, until one day the autumn wind blows his grandfather away and takes him up into the sky.
“The Kite talks about the issue of death, but in a simple metaphoric and symbolic way. It tries to explain the fact that none of us are here forever and all living creatures must die, but also shows that someone's journey doesn't have to end with death.” Director’s statement by Martin Smatana

Martin Smatana, born in 1991 in Slovakia, graduated in animation from the Film and TV School of the Academy of Perfoming Arts in Prague (FAMU) in 2018. His debut stop-motion film Rosso Papavero (2015) premiered at the Berlinale in 2015, subsequently screening at more than 200 festivals and winning 15 international awards. In 2019, his graduation film The Kite (2019) premiered at the Berlinale as well and went on to win several European awards. Since June 2019 The Kite has been screened in the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA). Martin Smatana is currently animating his first stop-motion feature film in Prague and preparing his next short for children.
