In the days leading up to May 68, the head of a housekeeping school sees her beliefs slowly falter.
Maintaining a household and stoically submitting to conjugal duty are the skills Paulette Van Der Beck teaches with fervour in her housekeeping school in the Alsatian town of Bitche towards the end of the 1960s. Marrying a man to be at his service is the law of the time. Until the sudden death of Paulette’s husband calls the things she believed in her whole life called into question. To make matters worse, she has to realise that her school is on the verge of bankruptcy as the winds of the feminist revolution of May 68 in Paris and the changes they bring with them reach her institution. But the wind of freedom also carries an old love back to the school. What if the good wife finally became a free woman?

Born in Brest in 1959, Martin Provost is a French filmmaker and screenwriter. He started his career as a film and stage actor. He then became a member of the Comédie-Française before devoting his career exclusively to writing and directing. He published several novels and directed two short films before presenting his debut feature as a director, Tortilla and cinema (1997). He became internationally known for Séraphine (2008) which won seven Césars. His films often feature portrayals of strong women, as is the case among others in Violette (2013) and The Midwife (2017). La bonne épouse (2020) is his latest film.
