THE LIVING WITNESSES
Luxembourg, 2020 / 90 min / Luxembourgish, French & English OV with English subt. / Documentary
Three living witnesses from the Second World War meet three Luxembourg students, either born here or immigrated.
The Living Witnesses is a film tying the past to the present: from antisemitism, racism and the Holocaust of the Second World War to the new wave of racism emerging throughout Europe today. Three living witnesses from the Second World War, survivors of deportation or concentration camps, meet three students from Luxembourg either born here or immigrated from Syria or the Ivory Coast. With the deportation and the extermination of Jews in mind, the six discover how crimes against humanity still play a considerable role in the consciousness of contemporary societies. We are still living in the post-war era, but the statements of “never again” seem to fade away.

The collaborative work of Karolina Markiewicz (born in Luxembourg in 1976) and Pascal Piron (born in Luxembourg in 1981) creates links between cinema, visual arts and theatre. At the centre is the individual in a human community, oscillating between resignation and hope. Karolina Markiewicz studied political sciences, philosophy and theatre. She works as a film and theatre director. Pascal Piron studied visual arts and works as an artist and director. Both have been working as high school teachers, in particular with refugees, for many years. Their cooperation began in 2013 and allowed Pascal Piron to move away from painting and look at images from a different angle, not only with regard to the two-dimensional perspective, but also in view of time and space. For Karolina Markiewicz, it was an opportunity to focus on writing and directing. They worked on a series of short films entitled Side-Effects of Reality, presented at a personal exhibition at Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain in 2016, the argos Centre in Brussels in 2017, and the Rencontres Internationales de Paris in 2017 and 2018. They worked on the documentaries Les Formidables (2014) and Mos Stellarium (2015), and developed an installation including a virtual reality experience: My identity is this expanse! (2020) on the resilience of children in exile. The Living Witnesses (2021) is their latest documentary.
