MOVING ON (NAM-MAE-WUI YEO-REUM-BAM)

Yoon Dan-Bi

South Korea, 2019 / 105 min / Korean OV with French or English subt. / drama

The portrait of three estranged generations forced to live under one roof by circumstances out of their control.

Following her parents’ divorce, Okju, her little brother Dongju, and their father are forced to move out of their apartment and into the house of the children’s estranged grandfather. Although grandpa's humble abode is pretty unsuitable, it provides temporary shelter to the family. During the school holidays, while the children stay at home and take care of their grandfather whose age is catching up to him at alarming speed, their father unsuccessfully tries to make money selling shoes. Following altercations with her husband that have effectively put her marriage on the rocks, Okju’s aunt also moves into the house under the pretense of wanting to take care of the children. While the adults are hard at work trying to keep up appearances, Okju and her brother slowly begin to adjust to their new home and housemates. But the grandfather’s failing health forces the two younger generations to make some tough decisions.

A remarkable debut reminiscent of both the themes and style of Japanese master Kore-eda Hirokazu, Yoon Dan-Bi explores the contemporary meaning of family in a series of unemphatic, yet acutely observed moments.

“Yoon Dan-bi’s script, and her execution of it, shows a terrific understanding of a traditional Korean multi-generational family unit. In that sense, the film often reminds of the works of Japanese master Hirokazu Koreeda […] Moving On may be a quintessentially Korean film about a traditional Korean family unit, but it is to Yoon Dan-bi’s credit that its multi-layered content has universal appeal and can be relatable to cultures and families around the world. Featuring memorable scenes that amuse, entertain and force you to contemplate, the film is sure to make its viewers smile involuntarily at various stages throughout its runtime and stands as one of the finer films of 2019, celebrating the centennial of Korean cinema as a great example of what indie cinema from the country can achieve.” Rhythm Zaveri, Asian Movie Pulse, 14/12/19
