Luxembourgish Premiere

Through the shared memory of the wife and mother they both loved, a father and his son get to know each other.

When Norie died of cancer at the age of 32, she left behind two young children and a partner. Decades have passed since then, and her now-adult son, filmmaker Yuki Kawamura, still only knows his mother from photographs. After receiving an unexpected letter from an old friend of Norie’s, Yuki flies back to Japan with his camera to find out who his mother really was. He convinces his father Munemitsu to join him on a road trip for Obon, the Japanese festival of the dead, to retrace the portrait of a woman ever-present in their lives. On their journey, Yuki and Munemitsu bond over shared memories and discover each other. They come to realise that they are no longer just father and son, but two men facing the pain of loss. Through old photographs and letters Norie wrote to her best friend as she was dying, memories a son never had, and memories his father wishes he could forget, come to light for the very first time, drawing a subtle and powerful portrait of the woman that was taken from them too soon.

"I was looking for a way to meet my mother and I found this way with the words of others. While talking to her friends and reading Norie's letters, her face gradually appeared. The testimonies of her relatives allowed me to discern her silhouette despite the passing of time. The film is part of a mourning process, in response to the questions I have been asking myself since childhood." Director’s statement by Yuki Kawamura
