When she refuses to join her country’s military, a young Israeli girl is imprisoned.
Like all Israeli youth, Atalya is obligated to become a soldier. Unlike most, she questions the practices of her country’s military, and becomes determined to challenge this rite of passage. Despite her family’s political disagreements and personal concerns, she refuses military duty and is imprisoned for her dissent. Her courage moves those around her to reconsider their own moral and political positions. OBJECTOR follows Atalya to prison and beyond, offering a unique window into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the perspective of a young woman who seeks the truth and stands up for justice.

“Molly Stuart’s film about a woman imprisoned for refusing to do military service paints a fascinating portrait of a country riven by conflict“ Leslie Felperin, The Guardian, 10/05/2021
“This speaks to the heart of civil disobedience—if enough people are willing to be arrested or imprisoned because of an unfair law, the results will ultimately make that unfair law useless. The problem today is we don’t want to have our beliefs challenged. Maybe we’re afraid we might find a crack in our tightly held positions. [Atalya] motivates and inspires others to follow her footsteps.” Alan Ng, Film Threat, 10/10/2019
“Every society needs citizens like Atalya who question the way things are done and expect an answer as to why those things are being done. Ms. Stuart’s film will surely have you digging a bit deeper in your own thoughts.” David Ferguson, International Policy Digest, 26/10/2019
