RARE BEASTS

Billie Piper

United Kingdom , 2019 / 87 min / English OV / Black Comedy, Anti Rom-Com

An anti rom-com about Mandy, a career-driven single mother, who falls in love with charming, traditionalist Pete.

Mandy is a single mother with a deeply cynical view on love. Mandy is a modern woman in a crisis. Raising a son in the midst of a female revolution, mining the pain of her parents’ separation and professionally writing about a love that no longer exists, she falls upon a troubled man, Pete, who’s searching for a sense of worth, belonging and ‘restored’ male identity. The misogynist know-it-all seems like a bad match for the confrontative Mandy and yet, she gets into a strange relationship with him.

“When I turned 30, I saw a lot of female crisis emerging around me. It was interesting to me that the world was pushing us to feel progressive and liberating yet I saw a lot of women falling apart. I found that really interesting, I felt that no one was talking about that. It seemed wrong to moan. Ultimately this film to me is about a female nihilist trying to navigate this liberated progressive time in women’s history, and the crisis and confusion that comes with that.” Director’s statement by Billie Piper

Screenings

“There are echoes of the French New Wave in the radical editing, wicked juxtapositions, and iconoclasm. It's matched by a visual style that heightens the realism through its use of portraiture framing and elaborate performance. It's an audacious debut. […] There is a Brechtian quality to how Piper veers away from notions of realism to give a challenging political perspective through performance. […] Rare Beasts is a striking debut that demands active participation from the viewer. While it deals in extremes, the familiarity of them is what makes the story resonate. Piper is concerned about the society that's been created and wants change, even if this means undressing and asking whether we like where the sun doesn't shine.” Kaleem Aftab, Cineuropa, 09/10/2019
