RED FIELDS (MAMI)
Israel, Luxembourg, Germany, 2019 / 93 min / Arabic & Hebrew OV with French subt. / Drama, Musical Film
The film adaptation of a cult Israeli anti-war rock opera of the 1980s.
Young, shy Mami lives in a small, ramshackle town in the south of Israel where she works at a petrol station. Her life is calm and uneventful and she enjoys many happy moments with her fiancé Nissim. But after their wedding, Nissim must leave for his mandatory military service and is wounded in action. He returns home seriously injured and bound to his wheelchair. To start a new life, Mami takes Nissim to Tel Aviv where they meet an eccentric professor who rewires their brains. Suddenly, Mami becomes the face of a new political movement and a media superstar. Determined to win both justice and happiness, she decides to run for president.
“Adapting Hillel Mittelpunkt's rock opera Mami, Yedaya fast-forwards this story of a gas station cashier from its original 1980s setting to the present day. Gorgeous traditional music shares the soundtrack with pulsing electronic beats, while inventive dance numbers lift this wild fantasia into La La Land territory.” Cameron Bailey, Toronto International Film Festival

"Keren Yedaya abandons the cinematographic classical realism which characterised […] her entire film back-catalogue, instead embracing unbridled surrealism. […] Through surreal science fiction and profoundly political lyrics, however, Red Fields transcends it all to become a magnificent ode to the demilitarisation of Israel.” Carlota Moseguí, Cineuropa, 11/09/2019
