Germany, 2019 / 90 min / German OV / drama

The real story of a young woman who loved life and wouldn’t bend to her family’s strict rules.

When she was 16, Hatun Aynur Sürüncü, a vibrant young Turkish woman was sent to Turkey by her conservative family to marry a cousin. The marriage was abusive, leading a pregnant Aynur to flee back to Berlin to bravely create a life of her own. Even though her Kurdish relatives believe that her escape brought dishonour on the family, Aynur refuses to let her brothers and parents dictate what she can and cannot do. Instead, she tries to live her own life, starts an apprenticeship and goes out at night. However, her brothers’ insults and threats get increasingly serious and before long, one of them shoots her in cold blood on a busy street in Berlin.

The film fuses still images and video footage of the real Aynur with an unadorned visual style to create an unsensational exploration of the events leading to Aynur’s death, and an ongoing global issue. Employing a voiceover from Aynur’s perspective, the killed woman’s agency is reclaimed.

“There’s a fine line between giving a voice to the victims of honour killings and putting words into the mouths of people who are no longer able to speak for themselves. […] despite the tragic ending, Hormann permits a note of hope with a tribute to the people, mostly women, who worked to support Aynur in her chosen life.” Wendy Ide, Screen Daily, 28/04/2019

„Sherry Hormann’s A Regular Woman takes a compelling new approach to the contentious 2005 case that shocked Germany: By allowing the murdered woman […] to narrate the action both before and after her death, the director […] restores the victim’s voice.” Alissa Simon, 27/04/2019, Variety

A Regular Woman is a meticulous dramatic reenactment designed specifically to give a victim back their voice — quite the honorable intention. The cast is excellent, with Bagriacik never going for easy pity or facile martyrdom. And the actors playing Aynur's family (Meral Perin chief among them as the heinous, self-righteous matriarch) eschew any cartoonishly hissable behavior. This is a brood whose evil is rooted in very mortal, if in no way moral, principle.” Keith Uhlich, The Hollywood Reporter, 27/04/2019
