SELFIE
France, Italy, 2019 / 78 min / Italian OV with English subt. (IT OV with EN subt.) / Documentary
A look at adolescence, class, state depotism and male friendship
Selfie is a unique record of the case of 16-year-old Davide Bifolco who was shot dead by a carabiniere in the Neapolitan district of Traiano in the summer of 2014, mistakenly confusing him with a fugitive. To understand a neighbourhood often portrayed as a ghetto and Camorra stronghold, as well as the circumstances surrounding Davide’s death, director Agostino Ferrente seeks out Davide’s friends, Pietro and Alessandro. Equipping the boys with a mobile phone and a microphone, he asks them to document their everyday lives as a “selfie film”. An impressive collage about adolescence, about growing up in a society that determines your future based on your background, about state despotism, about anger and grief, but above all about a tender boyhood friendship in a male world in which toughness reigns.

Born in 1971 in Cerignola, Italy, Agostino Ferrente is an Italian director, screenwriter and producer. He launched the Pirata Produzioni Cinematografiche production company and is one of the founders of the “Apollo 11”, a collective which saved the historical Apollo cinema in Rome and turned it into one of the liveliest cultural centres of the city. As a result of this project, Ferrente made the documentary The Orchestra of Piazza Vittorio (2006) about an orchestra founded at the centre. He is one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Doc/it Award for documentaries, presented each year at the Venice Film Festival. In 2013, Le cose belle premiered in Venice, a film about ten years in the lives of young Neapolitans which he co-directed with Giovanni Piperno.
