SILENT LAND

Aga Woszczyńska

Poland, Italy, Czech Republic, 2021 / 113 min / Polish with FR & ENG subt. / Drama

Anna et Adam, a bourgeois Polish couple is renting a vacation home on a dreamy Italian island, when their strict daily routine is interrupted by an accident.

This drama triggers a chain of events, leading them to act instinctively and irrationally, and ultimately ends up breaking their relationship, which is only perfect in appearance.

Silent Land is a film about the collapse of a relationship, but more broadly speaking, it’s about something more important that concerns me: the collapse of the value system in the modern world, the general indifference to reality, and social lethargy. Ultimately, Silent Land is a tale about alienation, not only from each other, but also from the world. It’s about conformity and passivity, where the need for safety and convenience is a strategy for survival. I wanted to show, albeit not in a literal way, how the whole world remains blind to the tragedy of the immigrants.” Director’s Statement, Aga Woszczyńska

"Silent Land is invigorating, fresh, and full of life." Kyle Baine, Film Threat, 11/07/2021

"Polish debutante director Aga Woszczyńska casts a merciless eye on race and class issues in this elegantly bleak Toronto premiere." Stephen Dalton, The Film Verdict, 11/07/2021

“Aga Woszczyńska’s first feature is a quiet yet powerful drama (…) Her film is like poetry itself – distilled, with every word used purposefully and carefully, and indeed, her characters bring to mind the TS Eliot poem The Hollow Men. However, Silent Land is not just observational, slow cinema; it’s also a distinct and socially engaged whisper.” Ola Salwa, Cineuropa, 21/09/2021

“A frostily assured feature debut from Aga Woszczyńska” Wendy Ide, Screen Daily, 11/07/2021

"Silent Land Captures an Entitled Couple’s Gradualc Emotional Implosion" Jarad Mobarak, The Film Stage, 10/09/2021

“Agnieszka Woszczynska's film is both ambiguous and unflinching in portraying a relationship that's avoiding truth (...) The performances are beautifully modulated.” Gary M. Kramer, Salon, 10/07/2021
