Eight short stories in which two eccentric bugs invent new ways of using objects abandoned by humans.

Tootletubs, a serious and hard-working beetle, lives in a small tree stump on the edge of a forest. While quietly contemplating the fields outside from his window, helplessly watches a cockchafer, Jyro, fall from the sky, crash through his roof and inadvertently land in his bed. Despite their differences, the two insects quickly become friends. Together, they go exploring the forest, have unexpected surprises and make new animal friends.

Films in the collection:

The Meeting
Tootletubs’s quaint life is suddenly disturbed when Jyro, a stranger, crashes through the roof of his house and lands in his bed. Initially reluctant to invite Jyro to stay, Tootletubs is surprised to find that Jyro is an excellent cook.

The Hungry Baby
The two friends find a delicious-looking egg. Once they are ready to crack it open, they start hearing sounds from the inside and a cute little caterpillar with a hearty appetite crawls out. Tootletubs' and Jyro's paternal instincts are instantly awakened.

The Chewing Gum
Discovering a strange, bulky pink object in a rubbish dump, the two buddies begain to quarrel. While fighting over what turns out to be a ball of chewing gum, the two get stuck in a sewage pipe.

The Hitchhiker
Tootletubs and Jyro hit an innocent hitchhiking dung beetle and hurt his leg while riding on their bike.  To make up for their reckless behaviour, they offer their fellow beetle a ride home. To their surprise, he wants to take his ball of dung along too!

The Nectar
The meadow is overflowing with flowers full of delicious nectar. But flying from bloom to bloom is hard work and harvesting the nectar takes time, especially for Tootletubs and Jyro who lack experience. So, the enterprising bugs invent an efficient multipurpose machine to do the work for them.

The Raspberry
On a small island, in the middle of a puddle of water, lies a perfectly ripe raspberry. Tootletubs and Jyro want nothing more than to taste it and attach a sail to a boat made of tree bark so they can reach it. Their nautical adventure takes an unexpected turn when a dragonfly swoops down on their ship.

The Harvest
With autumn upon them, the community of insects starts to harvest apples. Tootletubs and Jyro discover a large red apple in a tree and pick it, not realising a worm lives inside. The latter is not happy that they stole his house.

Winter has come and Tootletubs looks after a sick Jyro. As food is running out, Tootletubs skis to their neighbours and asks for help, but none of them are ready to share their precious supplies. After a storm sweeps across the forest, the bugs’ fortunes turn around.

Mariko Härkönen is a Finnish animation film director, screenwriter and script consultant born in 1970 in Tokyo, Japan, best known for visually striking and humorous handcrafted animation films. She enrolled in the Film Department of the Helsinki University of Art and Design (now Aalto University) where she started collaborating with Ismo Virtanen, a Finnish director and writer born in 1965 in Jyväskylä, Finland. As fans of Laurel and Hardy, they soon start with their own animation and silent comedy experiments. Their university project in puppet animation Bear It and Grin (1998) – which Virtanen directed based on a script by Härkönen – won several international short film awards. Since the release of Tootletubs & Jyro (2001), remastered in 2015, they directed and produced various animated shorts, commercials and documentaries, and published a children’s book as well as comics.
