Where is Anne Frank

Ari Folman

Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Netherlands, Israel, 2021 / 99 min / Luxembourgish version with English subt. (LUX OV with FR subt.) / Drama, history

In the presence of the director, Ari Folman

Where is Anne Frank follows the journey of Kitty, the imaginary friend to whom Anne Frank dedicated her diary. Kitty wakes up in the near future in Anne‘s house in Amsterdam and embarks on a journey to find her, who she believes is still alive, in modern day Europe. Kitty becomes a witness to the Frank family’s last months during the Holocaust, and to Europe after the Second World War.

„That the film’s lessons about intolerance are still urgent is hardly news. And yet there’s something surprisingly urgent in the way Folman and company turn clean, simple lines into full-blooded characters“ Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter, 09/07/2021

„Ari Folman has created richly imaginative storytelling which unselfconsciously mixes the historical, the contemporary and the supernatural“ Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 09/07/2021

„The superb animation Where is Anne Frank by Ari Folman is a standout gem. There are lots of films about the refugee crisis that have been made over the past decade, as refugees flooded into the continent after the so-called Arab Spring, but this one stands out for being family-friendly and holding the old colonial powers to account for commemorating figures such as Anne Frank but forgetting the lessons of her life when asked to show sympathy with those fleeing war zones.„ - Kaleem Aftab, Cineuropa, 09/07/2021
