Ivan Barnev (Actor)

Ivan Barnev was born in Dobrich, Bulgaria. He started his acting adventure in secondary school by playing pantomime.

In 1996 he graduated as an actor from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia. Since Ivan has been working continuously in both theater and film.

It was the theater stage where the wellknown director Jiri Mentzel discovered Ivan for the performance of Dinner of Fools (Askeer award 2001 for upcoming star for Ivan Barnev). In 2005 Ivan played one of the main parts in the internationaly cclaimed film Lady Z by Georgi Djulgerov (Best Film Sarajevo IFF 2005, Audience Award New Montreal Film Fest 2006). For his part in Lady Z Ivan received the Best Actor Prize of the Bulgarian Film Makers Union ’05. After working with him in several theater performances Jiri Mentzel casted Ivan for the leading role in the marvellous film I Served the King of England (FIPRESCI award at the Berlinale 2007). The movie was a challenge for Ivan. He had to speak Czech for it. A language he didn’t know but he learned during the four months of preparation and shooting. He also speaks fluent English and Russian.

His latest participation is the award winning The Lesson in which he plays with his wife !
