President of the International Jury

Pablo Trapero was born in San Justo, Argentina in 1971. In 1999 he directed his first feature, Mundo Grúa, which won the Critics Prize at Venice. In 2002, he founded the production company, Matanza Cine, that not only produces his own films but those of fellow filmmakers.  His second feature, El Bonaerense (2002) premiered at Cannes; Familia Rodante (2004) at Venice; and Nacido y Criado (2006) at Toronto. In 2008, Leonera, presented in Competition at Cannes, brought to light the talent of actress and producer, Martina Gusmán, who went on to become Trapero’s muse. He returned to Cannes with Carancho (2010) and Elefante Blanco (2012), both in the Un Certain Regard strand. His films have screened at key international festivals, receiving critical acclaim and awards. He has been a jury member at Venice, San Sebastian and Locarno festivals, among others. In 2014 he served as President of Un Certain Regard in Cannes. In 2015 the Ministry of Culture of France made him a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, becoming the first South American director to receive this honor. El Clan (2015) won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice International Film Festival and the Goya for Best Motion Picture. In 2017 he became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Trapero is one of the biggest creative forces in Latin American cinema. While developing several international projects, he started shooting La Quietud (2018) in Argentina, staring Martina Gusmán, Bérénice Bejo and Édgar Ramírez. The film premiered in August 2018.
