Synopsis

A fascinating portrait of Taiwan and its first female president Tsai Ing-wen.

With unprecedented access to Taiwan’s sitting head of state, director Vanessa Hope investigates the election and tenure of Tsai Ing-wen, the first female president of Taiwan.

The documentary shows how the progressive President Tsai is elected for a second term in 2020, in a clear signal to China. Her story is interspersed with interviews with historians from home and abroad, activists and academics, who provide a fascinating analysis of circumstances on the surprisingly liberal island.

Vanessa Hope is an award-winning producer and director who has produced multiple acclaimed films in China including Berlin International Film Festival selection, Wang Quanan’s The Story Of Ermei (2004) and Cannes Film Festival selection, Chantal Akerman’s Tombee De Nuit Sur Shanghai (2009), part of an omnibus of films, The State Of The World. She has also produced and directed her own short films, including China In Three Words (2013) and two episodes of China Collection. In 2015, she directed the documentary All Eyes and Ears on diplomatic relations between the United States and China.
