A cerebral meditation on the contemporary human condition
Various groups of young people endlessly wander through disparate landscapes in Eduardo Williams’ cerebral meditation on the contemporary human condition. Defying narrative conventions, the film operates more as a series of atmospheric narratorial threads in which characters—played by queer non-actors discovered on location—merge bouts of scripted dialogue with improvisation. The highly inventive camerawork builds towards a spectacular climax atop a Peruvian mountain.
In what might be a sly riposte to Hollywood franchises, The Human Surge 3 is the sequel to Williams’ acclaimed 2016 film The Human Surge. While both are visionary experiments in narration and imagery, the hallucinatory camerawork of Williams’ sequel pushes the boundaries of cinema.
Born 1987 in Buenos Aires, Eduardo Williams is an Argentine director known for his work in avant-garde and experimental cinema. After studying film at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires, he joined the Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains in France and directed several well-received shorts. His first feature film, The Human Surge, won the Filmmakers of the Present prize at the 69th Locarno Film Festival, and in 2019 he received a Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists.
