A candid portrait of the migration crisis, against a backdrop of systemic racism and consumerism
One night in Athens, Sam and Timur, two young refugees, find themselves confronted by Yannis and Sotiris, two local residents who are suspicious of foreigners. When they all end up locked in a construction site, each of them must face their fears, secrets and prejudices. Their isolation will reveal the fragilities of the four men ang highlight the scars of social exclusion.
Renowned cinematographer Vladimir Subotic sets his very first fiction film in Athens, during a single night when tensions between Greeks and refugees reach a vertiginous climax. This intense claustrophobic drama, which observes its characters with great attention, draws an honest portrait of the migration crisis, against a backdrop of systemic racism and consumerism.
Vladimir Subotic is a Serbian cinematographer and director who has been working in film and television for more than 20 years. He worked on notable films such as Ned Rifle, La Commedia, Utopolis or Chinatown: The Three Shelters, as well as TV series (Rosamunde Pilcher, Ein Sommer auf…). His work as cinematographer has earned him numerous awards. Utopolis, which had its world premiere at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, is his directing debut film.
