Andrey Zvyagintsev is a major figure in contemporary cinema, internationally acclaimed for his politically incisive and visually majestic works. Initially trained as an actor at the Novosibirsk State Theater Institute and later at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow, he eventually moved away from classical theater to pursue a profound passion for cinema, heavily influenced by masters such as Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman, and Jean-Luc Godard.

Following his directorial debut in television in 2000, he achieved global recognition with his very first feature film, The Return (2003). Winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, the film immediately established his signature style—often compared to Andrei Tarkovsky’s due to its sense of mystery, extended sequence shots, and demanding contemplation. He subsequently became a prominent regular at the Cannes Film Festival, where his films consistently earned prestigious accolades: Best Actor for The Banishment (2007), the Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize for Elena (2011), Best Screenplay for Leviathan (2014)—which also secured the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film—and the Jury Prize for Loveless (2017).

Now exiled in France, the filmmaker—who has publicly opposed the war in Ukraine while speaking out against the boycott of Russian culture—makes a resounding comeback with his sixth feature, Minotaur (2026), which won the Grand Prix at Cannes. Through his uncompromising filmography, frequently elevated by scores from composers like Philip Glass, Andrey Zvyagintsev crafts a meticulous and unflinching portrait of a modern society hindered by authoritarianism.
