Volker Schlöndorff studied economics and political sciences at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographique (IDHEC) in Paris, France. He then worked as an assistant director with the likes of Louis Malle and Alain Resnais. He has made over 20 feature films since his debut in 1966, as well as several TV films and documentaries. He has also directed several operas in Frankfurt am Main, Berlin and Paris. Since 1992 he has been chief executive of the German production company Sudio Babelsberg GmbH (former UFA/DEFA).
Schlöndorff received the highest French order, the Officier de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur in 2002 and the German Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in 2009.
