“Vortex is deliberate, pitiless and perfectly acted in a loose, improvisational style. It’s a film that goes out not with a bang but a whisper: with the shuffle of slippers, the creak of floorboards and the rasp of oblivious snores from the bed. Mother and father are together but alone, each on their own journey, each confined to their own oblong frame. But midway through, sitting at the kitchen table, the woman asks her husband for comfort and he reaches convulsively for her hand, briefly breaking the thin black border that divides them. It’s not much but it helps, the most anybody can ask for, a moment of connection before we all say goodnight.” Xan Brooks, The Guardian, 16/07/2021

“Noé bluntly defines his topic upfront, in an opening caption dedicating Vortex “to all those whose brains will decompose before their hearts”. His synopsis for the Cannes catalogue seems characteristically nihilistic – “Life is a short party that will soon be forgotten” - but a closing montage suggests at least that the party was good while it lasted. This scant consolation caps a film that is perhaps more artistically daring than philosophically profound, but is the first Noé film to date that you could actually call moving.” Jonathan Romney, Screendaily, 17/07/2021

Biography

Gaspar Noé (born December 27, 1963 in Buenos Aires) is an Argentinian-born French filmmaker. He graduated from the Louis Lumière National College and is a visiting professor of film at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Three of his films feature the character of a nameless butcher played by Philippe Nahon: Carne, I Stand Alone and Irréversible. Carne received the Critic’s Award at the 5th Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival in February 1994. Noé is greatly inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s films, and he occasionally makes references to them in his own works. His work has been linked to the New French Extremity movement.
