Synopsis

A beautiful and complex portrait of the poet, engineer and revolutionary Amílcar Cabral

Agronomist, poet and utopian thinker, Amílcar Cabral was the leader of the anti-colonialist movement against Portugal in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde until his assassination in 1973. Miguel Eek’s 16mm documentary about him draws on previously unseen archives and an imaginary diary inspired by Cabral’s personal writings.

Through letters, poems and archives, this rich documentary weaves a beautiful and complex portrait of the poet, engineer and revolutionary Amílcar Cabral, between utopia, diplomacy and violence. A film that also bravely explores themes of interracial love, ambition, terror and betrayal.
